Difficult to find light weight marine grade latches too. Most are either stainless or bronze and for marine use are typically rugged and thus heavy.

Thought about doing this, there is a difficulty to find a suitable gasket material that doesn't take up alot of space and will work with a small hinge angle at the hinge point and still seal at the latch. This is why cars for example have hinges like already mentioned that have large levers inside, so the lid compresses the gasket evenly.
