: compression latch. I built a hatch in this manner using a
: Southco Marine compression latch. It works all right. I did not
: use a latch with a lock, and for a while I was wishing I did so

: but it's held fine. If I'm going in rough conditions I use a
: float bag inside the compartment anyway.

That sounds like a good solution I will have a search for marine compression latches.
