1. Use the Rob Macks heat gun method, no need for water or going to extreme thinness.
2. Make your filler strips a little longer to make the cross grain bending less extreme.
3. Make the width (not the thickness) narrower will have a very strong effect on the force required to bend the strip. If you make the thickness less the strip will be less strong and closer to breaking due to the bend (vertical direction).
