We used to wet sand one design sailboat hulls too many years back, racing Thistles and Highlanders at the time. But these are faily heavy boats, your kayak isn't. The extra weight of the water you drag around on a 500 lb. dinghy with two or three crew means much less than a 35 lb. kayak with one person. Go paddle a similiar 35 lb. kayak and a 50 lb. kayak and tell me which one you enjoy more :)
