I have generally found that the timber strips that make up the hull and the deck are very close to half the weight of the finished kayak. Bulkheads, hatches, seats and footrests add quite a bit of weight.

I use Paulownia for most of the hull and deck and since it is about 20% lighter than WRC, it makes up a smaller percentage of the weight than if you use WRC. I use one layer of 4oz inside and out and 5mm strips on the sea kayaks and 4mm strips on the racing kayaks.

For example, my most recent kayak is a small child's 12ft kayak. The timber in the deck weighed 1 kg and the hull weighed 1.5kg. So the strips were 2.5kg. When glassed, they weighed 4.7kg. The bulkheads with hatches, the wooden seat and the adjustable footrest added another 1kg, so the total weight is 5.7kg.
