Having built several kayaks the last two years, there are a couple thoughts I wish I had known when I started. Do not try to make the first build perfect. Finish the build and get it in the water. Only after some time on the water will you know your future needs. True your forms and check your strips often for fair curves. Do not worry about small cosmetic flaws, get it in the water and beat the ever living heck out of it . A stripper is tougher than you think.Your paddling abilities and building skills will grow together. Use your creativity to solve problems if you cannot find the answers here. I would like to build a bead and cove but have only used bevels to date. Pick one or the other method and commit to it, and make it the right choice. I think if you build a number of them the rolling bevel will be the method of choice.Use cedar and pick some boards that are soft for compound curves . Use the heat gun to tame the strips or you will waste time scrambling around using clamps, tape, inner tubes, and hot glue and super glue trying to beat them down. The learning curve for me does not stop with the wood strips, the epoxy works you over a bit . I think the experience of learning to build and paddle parallel one another, sometime you really hit your groove and other times the going is more of a mud slog.
Every one of my builds has had issues big and small and none of them are important when you drop it in the water and wedge yourself in. Your stripper will look better than anything else out there, you will enjoy it more than any production kayak while you're out there paddling and thinking of your next build. best rh
