One extra thought. I don't use staples, but I do use panel pins. I don't hammer them all the way in unless I need to pull a plank down against a form. In that case I put the nail in through a bit of ply scrap wrapped in tape so that I can get the pin out without hurting the hull. A couple of these ply scraps are visible at the front or the boat in the photo.

The advantages are that there is only one hole per plank and that the pointy nail does not leave a nasty injury in the cedar.

I have convinced myself that if the holes are all nicely lined up they look fine on the finished boat. No one ever notices them.

I nail the hull and the deck. Life is too short and there are too many designs to build.
