A frek wind gust dislodged a kayak from a rack. It landed on its tail and broke a piece approx 2in x 1.5in off the bottom of the stern stem. This kayak has 4mm ply for the skin which has been blassed on the outside. The skin stops short of the end so the stern piece is exposed with resin filling between the end of the skin and the end of the kayak. The piece which which broke off was essentially just stem no skin. So do I
1) Just round off the break and finish off - I suspect this piece may contribute to this yaks excellence tracking so thats a factor in this option. There is no external keel strip.
2) Clean the joint and fit a new piece of ply and re glass over.
3) Make a mould around the break and just fill with epoxy. Maybe driving some headless nails into the existing wood as 'reinforcing'. This was my first thought. Incidently is kitchen cling wrap Ok to use as a 'parting' option for epoxy?
Any help would be appreciated.
