1/8" runout is huge; I routinely get 1/100". These are points I found need to be covered; some seem obvious but they're all equally important:
the plank edge must be straight to start with
the blade must cut easily without forcing: I use a narrow kerf finishing blade which just glides through the wood
a plywood baseplate as shown, with a zero-clearance slot cuts down splinters and keps dust out from underneath
a long guide ensures the saw is aligned before the start of the cut and stays aligned until it is finished
the guide must be straight: I had a problem, rechecked the edge, off by a hair, few strokes with a plane fixed it
the guide works best if its leading edge is beveled on the underside to deflect dust downward
It is very important to support the plank securely along its entire length
I don't like the cord trailing down - I have an overhead power outlet so I have one less thing to worry about
excess pressure at the start can cause a drift later, maintain gentle pressure against the plank throughout
forcing the leading part of the guide against the plank can pull away the trailing part; relax, just let the saw work
The illustrated technique is left-handed IMHO. I prefer to work right-to-left with with the guide on the "wrong" side of the blade. Obviously you must support part of the tool weight when cutting like that, and the plywood baseplate should extend well beyond the blade. Watch the edge of the baseplate, if it is collecting dust everywhere where it covers the plank then it is level.
