but could that tendency of lengthwise strands showing be caused by the fact that it is rolled in that direction and may be stressed strands (fractured)? The widthwise strands stay straight when the cloth is rolled so no damaged strands.

We can add that to the list of things that can go wrong. Under the heading of once bitten twice shy. Ideally one would use proven cloth that has laminated clear on the outside, then break out the new roll on the inside lamination. If it works then you have a first string roll again. Wow what a pain in the tail. best rh
