Using a skilsaw with a short guide will make it difficult to get the blade lined up at the start of the cut and provides no guidance as you complete the cut so the blade can turn. Whatever sense it may make with a tablesaw, it makes no sense if the saw is handheld. Been there, done that, had the problem, fixed it with a long guide.

If the plank and the guide are straight the cut will be straight. If the grain is causing strips to push the saw away from the plank during the cut, chances are the wood is not suitable for boatbuilding, but try turning the plank over and cutting along the other side.

A laser line is useful - it warns you if the saw is running off course.
