If people have rear bulkheads on their boats it should not be necessary to pull them across one's deck. SOFs, well that's another story.

If your boat doesn't have bulkheads, it absolutely should be equipped with flotation bags or it is 'an accident waiting to happen'. And if you are playing in rough water where there is any chance of blowing off a hatch cover, a floatation bag is a good backup to a bulkhead. Non-bulkhead boats with flotation bags behave exactly like bulkhead boats in a rescue situation.

Rescue discussions should be in the 'Technique' forum (if we continue), but in North America I think it's 'standard practice' to dump the water from the victim's boat when doing an assisted rescue (if at all possible, depending on conditions).

Whether or not this is the 'optimum method', it would be tough to find a kayak school/class that didn't include this as part of the curriculum, so the boat may well find itself in that situation some day.

There have been reports of lightly-built production kayaks having problems with cracked decks, so it does happen.
