Hi Sean - tell me how you did the nice rounded bow. I'm building a Pygmy Murrelet and hate the sharp pointed bow that this and all other kits have.

Sean's method is a good example of the 'liberating effect' of painting a kayak. . It's the style I like for my own boats these days.

For a 'wood-look' boat like the S&G Murrelet, I'd add an internal 'stem' (wood, with thickened epoxy, added after the panels were wired and epoxied). Then, after grinding back the tip/entry to the desired profile, I'd add an external stem of laminated layers of solid wood, shaping after laminating in place. You'd want to add the external stem after gluing on the deck, I think.

Quite a bit of extra work...
BTW, (like Bill Hamm?) I always add solid wood blocking in the ends (both hull and deck) of my kayaks (good for planting U-bolts) - it's cheaper and lighter than an all- epoxy 'end pour'.

Lots of strip boats- canoes especially, but kayaks as well- use an external stem. Getting it to 'look right' can be a bit tricky, but looking at commercial glass boats can give you some ideas.
