I've used the methods above and also used a short bladed "marking knife" to scrape the run off. The small short blade just gives more control and precision. It helps if the tip has been ground to get a little bit of a curve - it avoids digging in with the very tip.
Often if the run is new it will chip off in one piece (or a few pieces).

I also then re-coat locally for a better look.

No real problem - a necessary skill.
