I'm not sure where the theory came from that states kayaks should be able ram into a rock wall without damage to the bow.

It's not necessary. People often do this because they are not sure how to fasten the deck to the hull especially at the tips. The bow and stern tips are the strongest part of the boat because of all the angles meeting, plus.. when you glass the inside of the hull, you can put a filet there. On my last boats, I just made a "V" shaped plate out of pine that rides on the top edge of the hull ends back about 5 inches. When my deck is taped on the hull ready for joining, I release the tape on the ends and pry open the deck ends, slide in some thickened epoxy on the bow and stern plate and tape the deck ends down snug.
