Life evolves in such a narrow zone of viability. Self aware consciousness is probably only possible in an even narrower zone. These are chaotic regions in a generally boring universe. We are not safe. No matter how arrogant or optimistic we are, we are at the whim of forces infinitely beyond our ability to control.

Yet we have been around for a while, and our precursors have been around even longer. Our predictive models are often little more than off the cuff prophesies, especially when modelling complex systems.

I will resist fracking vigorously, but if an asteroid is heading this way I hope to be standing right in the middle of the impact point.

That's my take on total destruction. Head in the sand.
