Some investigatve reporting... I do have a source for white cedar within my area but while looking for a more reliable direct souce for quality boards I sent a northern Michigan white cedar mill an inquiry about availability of their lumber and received this reply from the owner:

The local market for Cedar has dried up - most of our incoming logs are between 6 and 8 feet in length. For as crazy as it sounds, most sawmills are closing because cedar mulch is actually more profitable than the wood itself! SO, they buy up the logs and grind it up instead of us making beautiful lumber. We do sell a small quantity of clear lumber to area enthusiasts, but certainly nothing in the 14' range you are seeking. I know people who attempted to join smaller lengths and had a terrible time with their canoes.

Surely red is more plentiful, it's all that is available at the big box lumber stores. The Western Red Cedar Association has done its job saturating the market. The White Cedar Association (if one exist) needs a marketing blitz.

On another path, I know of an Amish sawmill up north that I intend to stop by when I'm in that area again.
