Lots of grades of sitka spruce. The best is music grade (as I remember), it's what the best string instruments are made from. Next is aircraft grade, obvious you can't have weak spots, then spar grade I think. The stuff we need is a few grades poorer than we'd use in most other woods.

It's a pretty wood, relatively easy to find but cedar is much lighter. Spruce is stronger, but for a strip boat core that matters little. There are other spruces that will work fine btw.
