Try using satin wipe-on Polyuethene. I have used this coating on numerous woodworking projects. Its durable, easy to apply, and you can build it up to the desired finish. I buy it is small quantities at Lowe's and Home Depot.

On some of my furniture projects I wanted silky smooth semi-gloss finish, and this wipe on poly would do the trick. In fact on one projects I kept applying and wet-sanding until I got a high gloss finish with a satin finish product.
I am not a expert on finishes such as laquer or spray on finishes, but this wipe on poly provided me excellent results.
I always thought of using it on hand tools to get that silky smooth finish!
Good Luck
