Hi Luke H.
For my YOST Sea Cruiser SoF I looked at commercial foot peg sets available in Australia and various home-made designs on the 'Net. I noticed that 3 major brands all used 14.5" centres for the attaching holes. Managed to "borrow" a set of Yakimas from a friends Tahe Greenland T and used them as a guide.
Made my own set from 1/2" marine ply for the foot pads (bigger than on the Yakima which are clearly too small) and the longitudinal pieces and bracing gussets are from scraps of Western Red Cedar..
My footbraces are adjustable slightly (10mm fore and 10mm aft) but if that is not sufficient, the pad and it's doweled gusset timber are currently only screwed to the adjustable longitudinal piece and can be shifted. When in their final position after "sea trials", the screws will be removed and glued dowels inserted.
The 4 S/S screws holding the footbraces into the kayak frame will then be the only fasteners in the final craft; all other connections are glued and doweled.
Now, the Yakimas weighed 4.7kg each side whilst my WRC & ply foot pegs weigh 1.7kg each side. The saving of 6kg is well worth the small effort to make your own.
I am now very pleased that I went to the effort to make my own [well, that's until they break but I do not think that is likely ] ; the pilot holes for mounting the footbraces are at the same 14 1/2" centres as the Yakima, SeaLect and Smart Track commercial footbrace just in case.
Unfortunately I am currently 4,500km from home and do not have ready access to the appropriate server computer to "mount" pics to transfer to this Forum. BUT if you email me mcbunny09@gmail.com I can email you back the pics which are in the travelling laptop.
Cheers from Martin B. currently in Hobart, Tasmania, Australia
