I sometimes do the same ... I just bolt on a plywood plate to the Yakima foot pads ... works fine. As long as the foot pad is in a good location they work fine for me with or without the added pads.

Made my own set from 1/2" marine ply for the foot pads (bigger than on the Yakima which are clearly too small)

Uhm ... at 4.7kg per side ... you must have used the "leaded" version of the Yakimas ... mine weigh about 2.5 pounds total for both sides ...

Now, the Yakimas weighed 4.7kg each side
