Joe, regarding your varnishing question, lightly sand your boat with 150 grit paper to dull the sheen. Take your varnish and add about 30% solvent to thin the varnish. Use a clean soft cotton cloth to apply the varnish. This should give you the desired finish you are looking for. You can apply additional coats this way as soon as the previous coat is dry without having to sand. Finally use a good quality automotive wax or paste wax to polish.
