As a followup to my previous post on glassing the interior of the bow sections on my current build, a Voyager design supplied by Newfound. I have failed, with three attempts/strategies to glass the very fine ends with its significant recurve. I find it impossible to get the glass in without it looking like a really poor job. I spent a considerably amount of effort in the build to make this area look good so the alternate solution suggested by Et and Rob of a bulkhead is not appealing.
The solution I have decided on is to not glass the bow areas on the interior at all (less is more?) and add another layer of 4oz, to the existing 4oz, on the exterior. Leaving the gunwales a bit beefier than I had intended and longer decks (20") it will be a good experiment in strength and durability.
One solution for someone who would like to build this design with a high/decent finish in the bow areas of this canoe would be to build it in two sections kayak style, if one were to do this (i wont) the recurve could be even more dramatic. Making the seam tape blend in the interior bow sections would still be a bit challenging.
