I have a box fan mounted upside-down on the ceiling and wired into the lighting circuit. It has home-made aluminum brackets to hold a 20" x 20" furnace filter against the intake side. I run it when I have a lot of sanding to do, it does a good job of gathering air-born dust, keeping down the buildup of dust in the workshop. A few days before painting, I open the rollup door and blast the whole place with a leaf blower and vac thoroughly - wearing a mask! I leave the filter fan running a day or two - the light fittings have switches - and vac a couple more times, turn off the fan, let any dust settle overnight then clean off the hull for painting. Works for me.
