C, my advice, just varnish it and chuck it in the water and use the hell out of it. No one will ever know that you had specks in the varnish. They will be hidden by scrapes from rocks, scrapes from roof rack tie downs, dings from paddle strikes, scrapes from T- rescues, scrapes from pier walls every time one of you friends gets in or out (aargh), smudges where you wiped off seagull guano, etc etc etc. unless it is going into an art museum you will have less heartache every time you bang it into something if it is not perfectly finished.
The varnish is for UV protection, period, as far as I am concerned, I don't even like the look of varnish particularly. If I am doing any other kind of woodwork I always oil and polish. Never varnish.
But I am we'll known as a lazy bastard.
