My varnishing skills are so pitiful that sanding to 2000 grit then polishing was the only thing that left it looking decent. Not very hard to do if you have patience.
I used the same Harbor Freight buffer, went to the automotive paint store.
They saw a newbie and sold me the medium grit polishing compound. Later I also got the fine grit and the shine was much better.
More patience and money.
Of course it is possible to sand and polish completely thru the varnish. I just noticed a spot on my son's kayak.
