No need to wrap the sacrifical gasket material. Once you remove the cured hatch lip from the deck and contact paper(mold release), Use a screwdriver to dig out the sacrifical gasket material. Of course it is destroyed and you will toss it away. It will be difficult to get all the small gasket material out of the groove, so I do what I can by starting with a screwdriver, then use an old chisel, and finally sand out the rest. You do not have to make the groove look perfect because the groove will be hidden by a new gasket. If you find any voids or holes fill them in with thicken epoxy and sand flush. Also, you will install new gasket material that is 30% to 50% thicker than the sacrifical gasket once your kayak is completed.
