For kayaks you don't really need the biggest and the best, they are tiny. When I was using the big air tools I was rebuilding mahogany runabouts, huge boats with acres of wood to sand.

I went through a bunch of top quality electric sanders before I switched to pneumatic tools, I still have those same tools and they work exactly like they did when they were new. Except they'll drain my current compressor in a minute or two .

You can buy a decent 5 hp single stage compressor though for a reasonable amount of money, pay attention to Craigslist and that compressor while it'll be taxed will work fine in your home shop.
