I keep my shop at abut 55 degrees. All my epoxy work hardens up fine and on time. Yesterday I put my first coat of varnish on and 24 hours later it is still tacky to the touch. The can (Minwax Spar) says I can recoat after six hours.
I can sand with 220 grit and not have it gum up but it is still tacky.
Can I put on the second coat or will that not allow the first coat to completely harden eventually? I put a visqueen tent over the kayak to help control dust but I don't think there is any temperature difference between in the open ended tent and the rest of the shop.
The varnish is a few years old but has been airtight and worked fine two days ago on some unfinished wood at the same temperatures.
I am ready to finish up but don't want a soft tacky surface.
Thanks. Randy
