Yes,oddly enuf...it does matter. The only good-looking stuff I've seen is at Home Depot, as a 2x4 panel. It is different from the larger panels they sell, and the all the stuff at Lowes isn't as good. It has more visible voids and not as good a skin quality. I've only tested the HD stuff, because that passed my "eye test" . If you can find real Baltic Birch panels, like Ancient Kayaker, those are good, too. Big tip...the real BB

18 mm birch looks like a winner! Assuming its all the same no matter which big box store I get it from?

Would it be better to use 1/2 per Yost instructions to save weight, or would I be much better off sticking to the 18mm/.75"?
