Great Jack,

I used external buckle straps to hold down the hatch covers, just to make sure they stayed in place paddling and going down the highway. If you leave straps tight during storage, they will compress the gasket more. So when my kayak is stored I leave the hatch straps unbuckled.

I did a four mile acrossing in Pine Island Sound, FL and got caught in some nice size waves that broke across the bow. At one point the bow was submerged with waves breaking right to the cockpit. The hatch gaskets did the trick and didn't let any water in the hull.
