We've had several boats around here crushed using ratchet straps, they are fine for furniture, not for kayaks. The straps only have to be snug, no more. If the rack is proper and secure on the car the straps only have to hold the boats in place. At speeds over city driving speeds bow and stern lines are good insurance and they only need the slack pulled out of them, can break a boat in two using too tight end straps.

If you're driving 70 mph and have a 70 mph squall, what exactly did you expect a roof top load to do with 140 mph winds? Park it and wait for the squall to pass. The same thing that truckers do in those conditions and they do it for a living.
