Here is my car loaded up with 4 kayaks prior to a 1000 mile drive. I use a vertical "stacker" bar in the middle and then the original old Yakima saddles pointed in towards the vertical bar. I lean the middle two boats on the vertical bar, strap them down and then put some padding on the coaming and then lean the next boats on them.

I use nylon webbing straps with Ancra style buckles. I run the straps down under the cross bars and pull them as tight as I possibly can. The cross bars of my roof rack have good spacing on them and I can shake the whole car by pushing the bow of a boat. I included a bow line on one boat to add some extra rigidity. The bow lines go to webbing straps bolted in as Allan described.
