I'n not sure of the rig you used by your description. Many time the paddle float is done by holding the paddle shaft along the back coaming with one hand. Sometimes the paddle is put under some bungees. But if the paddle is put under very strong and rigid straps where it can't pivot, the stress placed on the shaft can be huge. Plus if the paddler is a bit clumsy and throws his/her body weight right over the shaft it can also create a lot of pressure. Normally the body is over the back deck and the paddle is used to stabilize the boat and the paddler just walks his legs over the shaft to make it into e cockpit. In 20+ years I have never seen a broken paddle with that technique but no doubt it can happen.
