OK so its not a real video of a real self rescue in dangerous conditions. Still I would hardly say that was a trick. I would prefer to categorize that as PRACTICE and I highly recommend everyone practice a method for self rescue. Sure I was only a few feet from the dock on flat water without a life jacket and with people watching intently so I was clearly off the mark for actual dangerous drowning conditions. Right?
Now for the whole truth. Soon after this video was taken I moved out into the big bold lake with waves and life jacket and a little adrenaline adding in as I rolled half way about a half mile from shore. I was surprised at how much more challenging it was to get back into the kayak. I had practiced with a life jacket so that was not the big difference. What I think the difference was, was the adrenaline, concern and maybe, maybe a little panic because if I couldn't get back in the kayak I was in real trouble. Or at least I would have to ask my girlfriend driving the speed boat for help. Probably be easier to swim to shore boat in tow. It took me three attempts to get into the kayak. I was just moving to fast and rushing to transition into the cockpit. I must stay calm and maintain balance and it works amazingly good for me.
So trick or practice, please try a self rescue method and find one that works for you. It is actually fun to play in the water but you all know that. By the way that paddle stroke has become instinctual and it has kept me from going over a couple of time. It surprises me how well it works.
