I had similar thoughts... On my Performance layups I use 3/16" thick cedar on the hull. 1/8" thick on the deck. I use 3.2oz tight weave S-2 glass throughout. For a typical offshore race kayak the bare hull weight sans outfitting is between 25 and 27 pounds. They have nearly the same stiffness as full carbon boats due to the thickness of the wood core.

Hi Dan, thanks for the numbers. 1/8" thick strips on the deck sounds cool – how much flex do you have with those? Did you use additional forms so the strips bend correctly (Björn recommended I shouldn't go lower than 5mm and plane/sand down afterwards instead).

The most common 3K fabrics are about the same thickness as 6oz glass. The lighter 4oz 1K carbon would yield a lighter boat but it is very hard to find and is about twice the price of 3K carbon.

The K-number gives an indication of strands per thread used in the weave, basically roving thickness. A 3K weave will have a rougher surface than 1K which in our case leads to more epoxy on the fill coats. As Marc already suggested, using unidirectional cloth would eliminate any issues related to that – with the few disadvantages of unidirectionals. If you want the best of both worlds spread tow weave might be a good (and expensive) alternative. I think it looks pretty ugly though.
