I've used a single inside strip of 3" tape, and doubled up hand cut bias strips of 4-6 oz. on the outside, with no problems. Then again, unlike Nick, I don't make a habit of playing in surf and tideraces with friends who don't always handle their boats as well as he does.
Intended use is the defining criteria for how heavy to lay up the glass and seams.
