On the Wahoo I built this past winter I transversely drilled through the stern and bonded a stainless pin. It does the same function as the indent on the stock ferrule. You put in the rudder at an angle and the pin prevents the rudder from sliding up. Take a look at the pin on the rudder and it should make more sense.
