With your method of running carbon fiber through aluminum tubes I would worry about electrolysis. Aluminum is supposed to corrode when it contacts carbon fiber. You may need some kind of sleeve to prevent direct contact. Or perhaps some kind of plastic tube instead of aluminum.

Hi Jeff
I've recalled your (autumn?) post after trying things out:
Have a look at how much Al2O3 that one tiny tube produces after one wet week:

So far I used my kayak as an assemble/take-apart tour-boat. Sweet.
For ease I left it at the beach without taking it apart for transport. That almost developed into a small catastrophe in that I wasn't able to take it apart after one single week. Apparently the constantly saltwater-wet joint between the carbon-fiber and the aluminium-tube (very snug fit) causes the 'electrolysis' to proceed ashore. No free aluminium-surface has any signs of corrosion - but the joint-corrosion needs a solution.

Off the point: My slim wooden-coaming too has taken alot of wear (see other pictures at the directory). It's build with a saw, a plank of wood - and a lot of fiddling. I have to sit on it to enter the kayak, and I've heard it crack a couple of times. The wet-expansion (despite of the lacquer) is very heavy .. and the expansion is 'anisotropic' .. different in different directions. Obviously I've not considered the characteristics of the material, but the assembled/glued structure in itself is amazing .. I still use it as it is, despite of the heavy wear.

Another off topic: I use a cloth that is only (pvc?) coated on one side - the other side (polyester?) showing the fabric of the cloth. Went over plenty of rocks and needed to repair: The cloth-side takes contact-glue well, but not the coated side. But. Apparently the cloth has a much higher melting-point than the coating - so I tried to 'melt' a patch and it was a success. The patch with the coated side against the coated side of a bruise can be warmed (I used a welders tool) on the cloth-side to melt the coating on the other side and not itself.

Had an early morning tour yesterday .. to try absolutely flat water for the first time.

Cheers
