How much varnish?!?!

Don't be too sure. I built a high-capacity Great Auk for a friend, and wanting the best possible finish I asked a carshop to do the varnish, stressing that I wanted a perfect finish.

When I got it back it had that "inches-deep" perfect finish that I wanted - and weighed 7 kilos more!

Hard to believe it's all varnish. 7 kg is 15.4 pounds. From their tech specs, Epiphanes Gloss is 0.92 kg per liter and is 55% solids (pretty typical for a marine varnish). If the math is right, he used 14 liters (almost 15 quarts) of varnish on that kayak!?!?

For a typical sea kayak with traditional varnish I used to use about a quart for the entire kayak, three or four coats total. Now I use three coats of an automotive clear urethane (four if I'm color sanding and polishing). It adds less than a pound of weight.
