Almost an even bigger mystery is how Uncle Nick saw it coming? Well, I know he said once, but I disregarded the comments as the ravings of a lunatic, and don't know how to search it up now that we know who the nut is.

Hi Kurt,
I recall being told to never paint cedar on all faces when using it for soffits and fascia, always leave the inside bare to breathe, otherwise it'll rot faster than ordinary pine.
It still throws me off a bit when thinking about strip-building with epoxy/glass.
I think the glass minimises any moisture migration with the hull and deck, mainly by holding a much thicker layer of epoxy than without, and these have little or no endgrain exposed.
A block will have a large area of endgrain no matter how it's oriented so has a higher potential to take in moisture.
