You are thinking correctly, Jen. I am not certain but if you are filling the weave on the outside of the hull, do not do it until the deck is attached. You are only going to mess up the exterior again once you attach the deck to the hull. You can fill the weave on the inside if you like but it is not necessary, will just add extra weight. I usually do one fill coat inside the cockpit mostly to soften the roughness of the inside surface but I also layer some foam on the cockpit floor for comfort and to prevent excessive wear on the epoxy.
