You definitely learn something new everyday. I haven't done a tradition SOF yet. The yost plywood construction doesn't seem to need the hook, since the gunwhales run all the way to the tips of the bow and stern, and the skin helps compress them in place. I couldn't tell mine where even free until the skin came off.
