Really long scarfs are real fun to cut too .

The only time a really long scarf 16:1 or more is used much anymore is if you are making a batten for lofting full size and can't find full length perfect grain boards (who can?). In that instance any change in a fair curve can't be allowed. I made a few battens over the years with 20:1 scarfs, wastes a bunch of perfect clear straight grain wood which hurts a bit when you find out what it costs now days. When I sold the shop had to cut them up, that wasn't nice either, where are you gonna store a 40' batten in a house?
