Bill,

Not sure I understand, do you mean the 5"+ long piece you will discard?
As shown by my novice son, if you stand to the left side of the stringer in the jig, the discard piece poses no problem, even if it gets flung by the saw blade. We never had one move more than 2 inches.
It is always possible the discard will get thrown, the normal way to deal is to stand out of the path.

Do you have a method for "retaining control"?

Bill suggested you might have a comment or method to make scarfing safer???

Need some positive way to keep the cut off tail under control, ask Jeff.
