Skin-on-Frame: new kayak frame done, tested - pic

Hi all,

Thanks again to all of you who shared their knowledge and esp. Tom Yost for making the plans available.
It has been the most fun project so far.
3 days and I have the fuselage. I 'skinned' it in 6 mil poly (vapor barrier), stapled and tested in the pool.
One happy customer:

I will be waiting for the skin fabric ordered from G. Dyson and building the second (my) boat.

Few lessons learned:
- sand the frame before lashing (if you're lashing with 50 lb braided fishing line), because sandpaper rips the line easily;
- don't use jigsaw to cut stringers at an angle where they attach to stems - not very accurate in my hands;
- think twice before using cheap cracked and knotted lumber - requires a lot of attention to weak spots and splicing.
- PVC pipe sections cut in the middle serve nicely as clamps:

Off to carving a paddle :-)

Oh, how much spar varnish will I need for 2 boats? 14' and 15'. A quart is probably not enough, should I get a gallon (cheaper)?
