I hate leaky hatches.....

A couple of ideas:
If the 'lid' is sticking to the rubber (tubing) gasket and tearing the gasket, I'd look at the lid interior.
Is it smooth? Perhaps a bit of epoxy work and sanding is needed?
Also, perhaps drop by your local auto parts store and get some 'Weatherstrip lubricant' which could help extend the life of your ('new') gasket.
