I was under the impression that the UV protection was primarily to protect the bond of the wood to what ever material is bonded to the wood, such as epoxy. The UV will actually breakdown the top cells of the wood, eventually breaking the bond at that level. Everything between the wood and the top surface benefits from the protection, but the wood is the most important element to be protected.
