I think that a recess also gives your knees something to push up on when you need to for bracing because it changes the angle at which your knees hit the underside of the deck.

So, as long as you can get your feet in, a recess might be good for a snug fit.

The other option is to not put a recess in this boat, paddle it some, and decide if you want a recess in the NEXT kayak. And there's always a next one...

....don't let anyone tell you there ain't a next one :-))

I'm sure it will be great whatever you decide!
