I built the one on the photo last saturday:

However, my intention was much simpler (and better): Two bike wheels connected with a long threaded axle that's protected by a tube in the middle. Put a minicell rooftop carrier on the tube (they have a groove that should fit easily), and you're done.
I had to find out that my cheap wheels had a non-standard thread count so I couldn't swap the axles…
